The fabulous thing about home decorating magazines is that they allow you to experiment with your own home's decoration without the expense, inconvenience and mess of renovation!

Recently we were discussing replacing the countertops and backsplash in our kitchen. We have dark wood cabinets and black appliances. I was torn between a dark countertop with a light backsplash, and a light countertop with a backsplash in the same color. I bought half a dozen kitchen design magazines and was able to determine by looking at photos of other people's kitchens the ideal color scheme for my own!

Another useful tip is to keep a scrapbook of your favorite decorating ideas. I tear out pictures in magazines and home decor catalogs and file them in an accordion folder. When I'm pondering a change in paint color, furniture placement, or a major furniture purchase I look through my folder for decorating ideas and resources.
